Sony A7V/A7RV Underwater Housing: Sea Frogs Regular vs Salted Line Version

Hey everyone,

If you’re shooting with the Sony A7V or A7RV and looking for a reliable underwater camera housing, you’ve probably come across two popular options from Sea Frogs: the regular version and the enhanced Salted Line version. The Salted Line series is a new series of affordable hybrid waterproof camera housings built for underwater and surfing photography. Both housings are well-made and capable, but they offer noticeably different experiences once you’re in the water.

After receiving lots of questions from our community, we decided to put together this detailed, real-world comparison. It’s based on feedback from dozens of divers, surf photographers and our own extensive testing.

Less Drag, More Control

Both housings share the same solid construction and 40-meter depth rating you expect from Sea Frogs. However, the Salted Line version was specifically refined for greater durability in super harsh conditions and big waves. The body has smoother lines and slightly redesigned handles that reduce drag in the water. This makes a real difference when you’re swimming against currents or shooting in moving surf. The housing feels more stable and requires less effort to hold and manoeuvre.

Ergonomics and Handling

This is one of the areas where the Salted Line version really shines. The control buttons have been repositioned and redesigned for more natural finger placement, especially when wearing thick gloves. The grip feels more balanced and comfortable during long dives or extended surf sessions. Many users tell us that after switching to the Salted Line waterproof camera housing they can shoot for significantly longer sessions with much greater comfort.

Video Recording Capabilities

If you shoot both stills and video, the Salted Line Underwater Housings for Sony A7RV/A7V сameras gives you a clear advantage. It features M33 bulkhead interface as regular, making it much easier to connect an external monitor or other accessories.

LCD and Screen Visibility

The Salted Line Underwater Housings for Sony A7RV/A7V version comes with a noticeably larger and clearer LCD screen window. This makes composing shots and reviewing footage much easier when you’re underwater wearing a mask, especially important in lower light conditions or when you need to check settings quickly.

Real-World Performance

In calm diving conditions both housings perform very well. But when you go dipper then 25 miters or the condition get more dynamic, strong currents, big waves, or fast-moving marine life, the Salted Line underwater camera housing consistently feels more planted and responsive. The refined balance and improved ergonomics translate into sharper images and less frustration when the ocean decides to test you.

Please note that the regular Sea Frogs Sony A7RV camera housing has been discontinued. However, it is still available on various marketplaces and from third-party sellers.

The Salted Line version is the more advanced and future-proof option. It’s the housing we recommend to most of our customers who want the best possible experience with their A7V or A7RV underwater.
