How to Attach and Detach Extension Rings on 6" and 8" Dome Ports

Hey everyone,

Changing lenses or performing routine maintenance on your Dome port often requires removing or swapping the Extension ring. While the process is straightforward, doing it correctly is essential to protect the O-rings and keep your Salted Line waterproof camera housing fully watertight.

Here’s a clear, step-by-step guide.

How to Remove the Extension Ring

1. Unscrew the safety lock pin (safety block) on the dome port. (Photo 1)

2. Hold the dome port firmly with both hands and turn it so the extension ring faces you. (Photo 2)

3. Rotate the extension ring counterclockwise until it releases, then separate it from the dome port. (Photo 3)

O-Ring Inspection and Maintenance

After removing the extension ring, carefully inspect the dome port O-ring. If the O-ring are clean, simply wipe away the old grease with a soft tissue. If you see any sand, salt, or debris, remove the O-ring carefully using the removal tool, clean both the O-ring (do not stretch it) and the groove thoroughly, then apply a thin, even layer of the original SeaFrogs /Salted Line Silicone grease.

We covered this topic in more detail in our blog post “How to Maintain O-Rings on Salted Line Dome Ports: Step-by-Step Guide” on saltedline.com.

How to Attach the Extension Ring

1. Align the extension ring with the dome port and rotate it clockwise until it stops. (Photo 4)

2. Install the safety lock pin and firmly tighten it. (Photo 5)

3. After this step, if needed, carefully service the main O-ring on the extension ring. (Photo 6)

4. Attach the dome port (with the chosen extension ring) to your Salted Line waterproof camera housing. (Photo 7)

5. Always perform the classic bucket test: submerge the fully assembled housing in fresh water, operate all controls, check that the Leak detection sensor has not been triggered, and visually confirm that no water has entered the camera housing. (Photo 8)

This simple routine takes just a couple of minutes but significantly reduces the risk of leaks and keeps your gear performing reliably for many dives to come.

Pro Tip

If you regularly switch between different lenses, having two or three different Extension rings ready is much more practical than buying multiple complete Dome port assemblies.
